What is Scent Work?

Scent Work is an activity where the dog is trained to source odour hidden in a room, outdoors, on a vehicle or in a container.  The handler's role is to learn to identify when the dog is "on odour" and reward the dog accordingly.

My dog doesn't have any prior training - can I still do Scent Work?

No training is needed prior to starting Scent Work, this is the dog's game and the dog will be the leader, using his natural hunting abilities and incredible sense of smell.

What age can my dog start Scent Work?

Puppies can start food searches at home as young as 10 weeks, however to attend classes with Scent to Search your dog will need to be fully vaccinated.

What if I don't want to compete in Scent Work?

Scent Work is a fun activity first, competition is an option which you may or may not choose to do.  There is no pressure to compete, you and your dog will gain all the benefits from learning Scent Work together without competition.

What method of training is used?

The method of training used is the K9 Nosework® methodology, which develops the dog's natural hunting and drive skills before progressing to odour.

Can all dogs do Scent Work?

If your dog has a nose, it can learn Scent Work!  Dogs of all ages, breeds, physical limitations can participate in Scent Work.
